Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura isn’t happy he was placed on the 15-day disabled list after breaking his right pinky finger, wishing instead he had been given an opportunity to play through the injury.

In other Brewers injury news, catcher Jonathan Lucroy is nearing assignment to the minor leagues for a rehabilitation period.

Segura was placed on the disabled list on Thursday, one day after breaking his finger in the Brewers’ 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

“I tell them, ‘Give me some days to see how it feels,’” Segura told MLB.com. “But I trust the decision that they made, because it’s a fracture and if you get something again, it’s going to be losing two or more months [as opposed to] maybe 15 days or three weeks.

“I don’t know. I just feel disappointed. I love this game so much. I don’t think anybody cares as much for this game as I do. I do the best I can no matter what and I’m always ready to play this game and help my team win some ballgames. I just want to be out there and I want to be healthy.”

Segura, an All-Star in 2013, is hitting .262/.306/.373 in 33 games this season, with 14 runs, four doubles, two triples, two home runs, 12 RBI and six stolen bases.

To take Segura’s place on the roster, the Brewers recalled infielder Luis Sardinas from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Acquired from the Texas Rangers in January as part of the Yovani Gallardo trade, Sardinas was hitting .288/.324/.386 in 32 games for the Sky Sox, with seven doubles, three triples, 14 runs, 18 RBI and six steals.

Last season with Texas, Sardinas appeared in 43 games and hit .261/.303/.313 with 12 runs, six doubles, eight RBI and five stolen bases.

For his part, manager Craig Counsell likes Segura’s attitude about the matter.

“I understand his position and I’m glad he voiced it strongly,” Counsell said. “I am. It makes you like, ‘This is a guy we want here.’ But it’s just too dangerous for him to play.”

Counsell said Hector Gomez, who started in Friday’s win over the New York Mets to open a 10-game road trip, will split time at the position with Sardinas while Segura is recovering.

Segura has a padded cover on the finger and had hoped such a device could keep him in the lineup.

“Maybe use something for sliding or whatever so I can keep playing my game,” Segura said. “But they make that decision and I have to take it. I don’t have any choice.”

Also on the front of Brewers injury news, third baseman Aramis Ramirez was back in the lineup Friday after missing six games with a stiff back.

Ramirez didn’t miss a beat, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI before leaving the game in the eighth inning.

He raised his slash line to .253/.292/.429 with the big night and is hitting .378/.440/.689 with three homers and 10 RBI in his last 14 games.

For Lucroy, he has resumed some catching duties while recovering from a broken left big toe, but he is still not allowed to run.

  • The hope is to have their All-Star catcher head out for a rehab assignment by the end of the 10-game road trip that started Friday in New York and continues through Detroit and Atlanta.

“The running part’s a big one,” Lucroy told MLB.com. “When we get to that, then we’ll start talking about a return date. We’ll have to wait and see on that one.”

He has been cleared to catch the bullpen sessions between starts for the members of the rotation, doing so Friday while wearing new cleats from New Balance that have had toe caps made of carbon fiber and covered in rubber added to them.

Lucroy was hurt April 20 when he was hit by a foul tip and has missed 23 games thus far.

Martin Maldonado has started 21 of those 23 games and is hitting .183/.234/.268 with two homers and seven RBI during that stretch. Juan Centeno, recalled from Colorado Springs when Lucroy was placed on the disabled list, started the other two games and is 0-for-9 in three appearances thus far.
