3. Emanuel Byrd

The top of the Packers’ depth chart is already stacked with the free agent acquisitions of Jimmy Graham and Marcedes Lewis. Those two give Green Bay one of the best and most dangerous tight end duos in the entire NFL.

Behind them, however, is an opening waiting to be taken advantage of. Sure, the Packers’ have former Wisconsin Badger Lance Kendricks. Unfortunately, Kendricks failed to impress last season and is in the final year of his deal. This could lead to someone like Emanuel Byrd jumping him on the roster and earning the third spot on the depth chart.

Byrd spent eight weeks on the Packers’ practice squad last season before earning his way onto the 53-man roster for the final game of the season. In that lone appearance, Byrd snagged two passes for 31 yards. He was originally an undrafted free agent who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. The Chiefs released him shortly after training camp started and he spent most of last summer with the Packers, before being released at the beginning of the September.

Byrd appears to have the physical tools to make some eye-opening plays in camp. That’s the biggest factor to consider, as Graham and Lewis might not get a lot of work in, especially in preseason games. Let’s see if Byrd can take advantage and get his name out to the public.
