Milwaukee Bucks coaching rumors: 10 candidates they’re reportedly interested in
It’s fair to say the Milwaukee Bucks are doing their due diligence in search of their next head coach. They’re scouring the NBA and reportedly interviewing people of all experience levels to find the man who can lead them back to the promised land.
Milwaukee surprisingly fired Mike Budenholzer following their first-round playoff upset at the hands of the Miami Heat. That put the Bucks in a difficult spot, as it will be hard to find a coach of the same or better quality.
So far, there have been reports about ten candidates the Bucks have interest in. I’ve compiled them all in one spot for your convenience.
The Milwaukee Bucks are casting a wide net in search of their next head coach, reportedly showing interest in these 10 candidates so far.
Tyronn Lue
The Athletic reported early on in the process that Milwaukee would target head coaches still employed in the NBA. Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer corroborated that by reporting Milwaukee is interested in Tyronn Lue, the Los Angeles Clippers head coach. However, that’s as far as the reports have gone, as there hasn’t been public notice that the two parties have completed an interview.
Monty Williams
Several reports have detailed the Bucks’ interest in the freshly fired Monty Williams. Williams was let go after a disappointing playoff run with the Phoenix Suns. Shams Charania has gone as far to say he’s the favorite for the Bucks’ job.
Kevin Young
Kevin Young, an assistant under Williams in Phoenix, is another rumored candidate the Bucks are interested in. He’s expected to receive interest from Toronto and Phoenix as well.
Chris Quinn
Adrian Wojnarowski is also reporting the Bucks are pursuing Chris Quinn from the Miami Heat, the team that eliminated them from the postseason. Quinn has worked under Erik Spoelstra and is gaining traction as a top candidate around the league.
Adrian Griffin
Continuing with assistant coaches who haven’t been head coaches, Milwaukee also reached out to Adrian Griffin with the Raptors. Griffin began his coaching career with the Bucks and could see it come full circle if hired.
Charles Lee
The only internal candidate mentioned on this list, it seems like it’s only a matter of time until Charles Lee lands a head coaching gig. He’s also a finalist in Detroit and is one of the brightest young minds in basketball.
James Borrego
James Borrego was one of the original candidates mentioned by Wojnarowski back on May 10th, but we haven’t heard much about him since. He was the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-2022 and didn’t coach last year.
Kenny Atkinson
Atkinson is one of my favorites to land the Bucks’ head coaching job. He was the former head coach of the Brooklyn Nets and has recently spent time as an assistant under Lue and Steve Kerr. He’s an analytically-focused coach. Wojnarowski reported their interest.
Mark Jackson
Where would we be without a stressful candidate thrown in the mix? Mark Jackson, who hasn’t coached since 2014 when he was with the pre-dynasty Golden State Warriors, was reported to interview for the opening.
Scott Brooks
We’ve officially reached the portion of the list where we hope and pray the Bucks don’t go in this direction. Scott Brooks is the former head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizards and is currently an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers. Maybe the third times the charm?
Not Mentioned
There’s one big name that wasn’t mentioned on this list and that is Nick Nurse. He’s one of the betting favorite to become the Bucks’ next head coach and a lot of fans have speculated about his fit since he was fired this offseason as well. However, there haven’t been any reputable reports connecting the two.
