Packers’ pros and cons of becoming sellers at 2022 NFL trade deadline
For weeks we’ve been asking ourselves who the Green Bay Packers will trade for ahead of the deadline. What if we’ve been asking ourselves the wrong question?
We’ve all been assuming Green Bay was actively working the phones to try to improve their team. At 3-4, its season is still alive and they have a chance to make a run if they can clean up several areas of their game. However, they have an extremely difficult slate of games staring them directly in the face. There’s a real possibility they’ll be 4-8 in several weeks.
Instead of buying at the trade deadline (Tuesday, November 1st at 3 pm CT), what if they were to sell? That would be an extremely difficult decision to make. Here are the pros and cons of that move.
What if the Green Bay Packers become sellers at the 2022 NFL trade deadline? Here are the pros and cons to that franchise-altering decision.
Pro: Acquire cheaper players
Green Bay’s future cap space is an absolute mess. They’ve pushed so much money into the future to keep their current Super Bowl chances afloat. That will make for some very difficult years ahead.
If they do make a sellers-type trade, they could either acquire a player on a rookie’s contract or future draft picks to add players on rookie deals. That would go a long way to help the cap issues that are staring them directly in the face.
Con: Giving up on Super Bowl window
The Packers Super Bowl window might’ve already been slammed shut, but there’s a tiny possibility it’s still cracked open. At least, that’s what optimists like myself hope/believe.
If Green Bay goes into a firesale or even trades some of their contributors, they’re completely giving up on any championship hopes. For a franchise that has been consistently on the short list of Super Bowl contenders for about 30 years, that’s a heavy decision to make. Who knows when or if they’ll get back there? It took them decades to return to prominence before Brett Favre’s emergence in the early 1990s.
Pro: Salvaging the future
The Packers could begin their rebuild ASAP if they make some moves at the deadline. There will still be a dry period, to be sure, but they could begin to salvage the future. They have several veterans on their roster that contending teams would be interested in. They might as well set up a new timeline that measures better with cap space and player talent.
Con: The end of an era
Favre and Aaron Rodgers gave Green Bay an unprecedented run in NFL history. For 30 years, the Packers have had a Hall of Fame quarterback under center. That has been taken for granted lately. Who knows when or if if the Packers will ever get a quarterback of that caliber on the team again.
