Next 5 games will make or break Packers’ season
Throughout Matt LaFleur’s tenure as the Green Bay Packers’ head coach, his team has been known to lack resiliency. They’re great when playing from ahead and setting the tone. But as soon as things go awry, they shrink into the shadows.
That theory will get put to the ultimate test over the next five games.
Green Bay is entering a Sunday Night “showdown” against the 5-1 Buffalo Bills riding a three-game losing streak. A losing streak that has taken place in what was supposed to be the easy portion of their schedule.
Following three-straight wins against the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, the Packers were feeling themselves entering their week five matchup against the New York Giants. After jumping out to a 17-3 lead halfway through the second quarter, adversity struck and they were never able to recover.
The Green Bay Packers’ next five games will tell us exactly what they’re made of and will make or break their 2022 NFL season.
The Packers hosted the New York Jets the following week and get embarrassed on their home field. New York Outscored them 24-7 in the second half and beat them by three scores to send the Pack to .500. It’s continued to get worse, as Green Bay blew yet another lead last week and fell to the Washington Commanders and backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke. This was after they led 14-3 early in the second quarter.
At 3-4, Green Bay is already 2.5 games behind the 5-1 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North and has a critical slate of games ahead of them.
Following their game at Buffalo on Sunday night, they travel to Detroit to take on the 1-5 Lions. That’s their only easy game in this stretch and should be an automatic victory. However, Detroit is a physical, hard-playing football team–the kind that gives the Packers trouble.
Green Bay then hosts the 5-2 Dallas Cowboys and the 4-2 Tennessee Titans before traveling to Philadelphia to take on the 6-0 Eagles. Overall, that’s a combined record of 21-10, even with the Lions’ putrid record in there.
The Packers could be staring straight at a 4-8 record when it’s all said and done.
With their Super Bowl window quickly closing, they have to take a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror if it hasn’t been slammed shut already. Their future has already been mortgaged–is it time to minimize the long-term impact and make some win-later moves?
