The Milwaukee Bucks need good seasons from these 3 players
By Todd Welter
The Milwaukee Bucks hope to win their second championship in three seasons. To get there, Milwaukee will need a healthy Khris Middleton in the playoffs.
They will also need Giannis Antetokounmpo to continue to play at an elite level. Jrue Holiday will once again need to be outstanding at running the point along with playing elite defense.
The Milwaukee Bucks will also need other players on the roster to help out the big three. Brook Lopez needs to continue to stretch the floor by knocking down threes and also boxing out so the Bucks can get rebounds and get out on the break.
Bobby Portis needs to continue his ascension into a star NBA player. Wesley Matthews needs to be a solid veteran wing defender. Once he is back to being healthy, Pat Connaughton has to be the reliable scoring option off the bench.
The Milwaukee Bucks in particular need these three players to step up if they hope to make another run at the Larry O’Brien trophy.
Jevon Carter needs to be a reliable backup point guard.
The depth chart right now has George Hill backing up Holiday. Hill is coming off one of his worst seasons in the NBA. The veteran averaged just 6.2 points per game and shot 30.6% from three-point range. He even thought about retiring because of all the injuries he battled through.
Hill may be ready for a redemption season but his numbers have been in decline for the past couple of seasons. Hill is also 36 and is going to need some nights off.
On the other hand, Jevon Carter is 27 and made an impact in Hill’s absence last season. He played solid defense and shot well from three-point range.
Carter also had a good preseason. He still has young legs and has the chance to get better. If he can continue to knock down threes, play good defense, and dish out more assists, it could help solidify the point guard depth behind Holiday.
Grayson Allen needs to continue to knock down shots and play better defense.
Allen had a great playoff series against the Chicago Bulls last season. He was ineffective against the Boston Celtics in the Conference Semifinals, however. Boston’s defenders rendered him ineffective and he could not keep up defensively.
The Milwaukee Bucks are going to need his outside shot again this season. He can help stretch the floor to allow Giannis to operate easier on his way to the hoop. He can catch the open pass and knock down a big three.
Once Middleton comes back, Allen will be a valuable asset off the bench. Especially with newly acquired Joe Ingles out for at least half the season.
The Bucks will need him to take a step forward defensively especially come playoff time. He has to find a way to prevent his man from easily blowing by him. If he can find a way to be even average defensively, the Bucks have a shot at winning a title.
Also, if the Milwaukee Bucks need to make a midseason trade, Allen would be the most likely moved piece. The Bucks need him to be at his best in case they need to make a move at the trade deadline.
Jordan Nwora needs to take advantage of his early playing time.
Nwora is back in the fold after agreeing to a two-year deal to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks. He got a little jump in his minutes during his second year and ended up scoring 7.3 points per game.
He was also inconsistent defensively during the 62 games he played last season. Still, he showed enough for the Milwaukee Bucks to bring him back. With Middleton and Joe Ingles out to start the season, he will get a chance at some minutes.
He needs to show his defense has improved. He has shown he can score at the NBA level and his scoring off the bench will be needed.
The Bucks need a longer wing who can defend coming off the bench. One of the reasons the Bucks lost to Boston was that they did not have that player behind Middleton. When he went down, it was an uphill battle.
If he can show he can defend better and hit shots, he can be a valuable asset off the bench. It would be especially welcomed as first-round pick MarJon Beauchamp adjusts to the NBA game.
A title will come down to how Giannis, Middleton, and Holiday play. If they can get some help from these three players, they sure have a good shot at another championship parade.
