The Green Bay Packers open up the regular season in a difficult road environment playing the revamped Minnesota Vikings.

As I’ve done the last few seasons, I will be diving into my five burning questions that face this Packers team ahead of each of their upcoming matchups.

How does the Green Bay Packers special teams unit look?

The special teams unit is coming off a very rough season, to put it nicely, but Rich Bisaccia is tasked with turning around a unit that was not only bad in 2021 but a group that has consistently been among the worst in the NFL for a decade.

This offseason, we have seen a shift in how the Packers organizationally view the special teams unit. That began with the hiring of Bisaccia, who was also given a say in some of the personnel decisions. Green Bay has also rostered a few plays whose primary role will be on special teams, something they haven’t done in the past, and we’ve also seen more starters being utilized over the summer.

Based on what we saw during the preseason games, this group still has a ways to go, which to some degree, should be expected. There was once again poor blocking and missed tackles, among other things.

Now, to add a little context and some hopefulness, many of the players who were taking those snaps are either on the practice squad or not on the team anymore. However, an uneasiness still remains about this unit.

The Packers have taken additional measures off the field in an attempt to turn things around, but ultimately, we have to see it translate on the field. For a team that may not put up as many points as we are used to seeing while being more reliant on the defense, it may be more difficult to overcome special teams blunders in 2022.
