Packers roster prediction ahead of final preseason game
By Paul Bretl
We have another week of training camp practices, including two joint practices with New Orleans, and another Green Bay Packers preseason game to assess.
And with that, there are some changes to my 53-man roster prediction based on the new data points and what we’ve learned. With final rosters to be set in one week, here is how I believe things currently stand.
Green Bay Packers 53-man roster prediction: QB, RB, and WR
Quarterback (2): Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love
Previous prediction (2): Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love
There really isn’t much to say about the quarterback position–these are your two guys.
Running back (3): Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, and Patrick Taylor
PUP list: Kylin Hill
Previous prediction (3): Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon, and Tyler Goodson
Am I overthinking things? I might be overthinking things.
No question, Tyler Goodson has been the more impressive running back on offense. But as Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur both mentioned last week, the ability in pass protection and on special teams are going to be what determines this third running back role.
Experience can often be an important factor when it comes to those two phases of the game, which may give Taylor an edge. We also saw Taylor excel in these two phases against the Saints, with a nice blitz pickup and a special teams tackle.
Wide receiver (7): Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, and Juwann Winfree
Previous prediction (7): Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, Randall Cobb, Amari Rodgers, Romeo Doubs, Juwann Winfree, and Christian Watson
The biggest question for me at this position has been whether the Packers were going to roster six or seven players. For the longest time, I assumed six, but Aaron Rodgers has spoken too highly of Juwann Winfree too often this summer. Rodgers wants reliability at the receiver position, and Winfree has provided that.
