What to Know: Packers cut Malik Taylor and claim Travis Fulgham
By Paul Bretl
Roster building is non-stop, as Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst likes to say.
After filling their one open roster spot on Tuesday with safety De’Vante Cross, the Packers released wide receiver, Malik Taylor on Wednesday and reportedly claimed wide receiver Travis Fulgham off of waivers from Denver.
What to know about the Packers two roster moves
Taylor had been a core special teams member for Green Bay the last few seasons, including as the primary kick returner in 2021 after Kylin Hill was injured. Unfortunately, Taylor struggled to stay healthy this summer.
If Fulgham’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he briefly spent time with the Packers during their 2020 training camp before being cut.
Fulgham is a big-bodied boundary target, standing 6’3” and weighing 215 pounds. He was a sixth-round pick in 2019 out of Old Dominion – where he was a big play threat his final season – by the Detroit Lions.
That same year Fulgham was cut by the Packers; he made some noise in Philadelphia, catching 60% of his 64 targets at 14.2 yards per catch with four touchdowns per PFF ($$).
Fulgham spent the 2021 season with Denver but saw just two offensive snaps in Week 17. Over his three NFL seasons, Fulgham has 57 career special teams snaps, with most coming on the kick return team.
Prior to the addition of Fulgham, the Packers found themselves a bit shorthanded at receiver heading into their matchup with New Orleans.
Allen Lazard, Sammy Watkins, and Randall Cobb won’t play again. Taylor had been injured, and Danny Davis missed Wednesday’s joint practice with an injury of his own. Meanwhile, Christian Watson is still working his way back after recently being activated off the PUP list.
As far as the 53-man roster goes, the first six spots on the Packers’ depth chart are accounted for at receiver; the question, however, is can Juwann Winfree work his way onto the roster as the seventh?
