6 Takeaways from Packers 2nd week of training camp practices
By Paul Bretl
Over roughly the last two weeks, the Green Bay Packers are nine practices into their 2022 training camp schedule.
Here are the six big things we’ve learned over this last week–and if you missed last week’s five takeaways, you can find them here.
Is Vernon Scott moving up the Packers’ safety depth chart?
As I wrote recently, the Green Bay Packers could end up having to make some difficult decisions at the safety position when it comes time to trim rosters to 53 players.
Dallin Leavitt was a core special teams player under Rich Bisaccia in Las Vegas. Shawn Davis appeared to be the front-runner for the third safety role coming out of minicamp. Innis Gaines brings versatility, while Tariq Carpenter was a special teams ace at Georgia Tech.
It’s a crowded room, to say the least, with two to three roster spots up for grabs. However, over the last week of practices, it is Vernon Scott that appears to be moving up that depth chart.
Scott was a seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2020–playing all over the field while at TCU. He saw 90 defensive snaps as a rookie and made the roster again in 2021 but was often inactive.
This week, we saw Scott come away with an interception in a two-minute drill, and when Darnell Savage left the Family Night practice with an injury, it was Scott who took his place next to Adrian Amos.
