Bucks MarJon Beauchamp Summer League Review
After two games of Summer League action, we have had a pretty good glimpse of Milwaukee Bucks’ first-round pick MarJon Beauchamp.
While certainly, Summer League games do not tell the whole story of what a player will perform like in the regular season, the Summer League is nonetheless a great way to at least see the playing style of the players.
Beauchamp has impressed in his two games thus far. In his first game, which resulted in a victory against the Nets, Beauchamp posted 16 points, three rebounds, a block, and a steal to go along with three 3-pointers.
In Monday night’s loss to the Celtics, Beauchamp had 15 points, three rebounds, and two made 3-pointers.
Game highlights for the game against the Nets can be found here, and highlights for the game against the Celtics can be found here.
After going back and watching each full game, here are my thoughts on Beauchamp thus far.
Beauchamp in the Bucks offense
Overall, Beauchamp made the most of his limited touches. While some seem upset that he was not the focal point of the offense, I think it was a good showcase of how he would be used in the regular season.
Beauchamp made timely cuts and used his athleticism to make some really tough finishes around the rim. A play that sticks out to me in the game against the Nets was when Beauchamp had the ball on the right-wing, drove past his defender using a right-to-left crossover and hesitation with his left hand, then made an acrobatic finish with his right hand while all his momentum was taking him left.
Shooting-wise, Beauchamp has been pretty good as a spot-up shooter, although sprinkled in there were a few airballs. He hit a dagger right corner three against the Nets and then also hit a spot-up three from the left corner against the Celtics. If Beauchamp could develop into an above-average spot-up shooter from the corners, it would be a huge benefit to the Bucks half-court offense.
The bad for Beauchamp offensively consists of some ill-advised turnovers. The game sped up too much for him a few times, and he simply made some bad passes. Additionally, his ball-handling is super loose, which helped defenders knock the ball away a couple of times. For someone with such long arms, having a loose handle is normal and should hopefully get tightened up in the future.
Beauchamp’s Defense
Beauchamp was also solid defensively. He had a fantastic help-side block in the game against the Nets and showed how his athleticism can be used to aid the Bucks’ defense.
Beauchamp did well switching on to defenders and making them really work to get around him. A couple of times late in the Nets game, there were multiple possessions where Cam Thomas called a screen to get Beauchamp off of him. Beauchamp also has fantastic recovery ability. At times the ball handler shook him but still could not get an open shot.
The bad defensively is that he did get blown by sometimes against smaller guards, which is to be expected. A few times, he also failed to stop the ball in transition. Overall, the good far outweighs the bad defensively, in my opinion.
There is a lot to like about Beauchamp thus far. As I said, it is good to take Summer League with a grain of salt for both the good and bad. Let’s hope that he continues to develop and can be a part of the rotation in the coming year.
