The Green Bay Packers have quietly undergone a huge transformation along their offensive line over the last few years. While they’ve lost major contributors in Bryan Bulaga, Billy Turner, and Corey Linsley, they’ve constantly replenished the position with gluttony of draft picks.

That’s left Green Bay with somewhat of a revolving door up front, but one that has continued to provide Aaron Rodgers with great protection. There are plenty of question marks at the position heading into this season with most of them being due to injuries or the positional flexibility of many of their players.

After looking at the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, let’s take a preview of the Packers’ offensive line to see where it stands this summer.

Here is a position-by-position preview of the Green Bay Packers this summer continuing with their offensive line situation.

Currently on Roster: LT David Bakhtiari, LG Jon Runyan, C Josh Myers, RG Royce Newman, RT Yosh Nijman, T/G Sean Rhyan, OL Zach Tom, T Rasheed Walker. G/T Elgton Jenkins, C Jake Hanson, C Michal Menet, C Cole Schneider, G George Moore, T Jahmir Johnson, T Caleb Jones, G/T Cole Van Lanen.

There’s no doubt Green Bay is deep along the offensive line. Many of their players can’t be pigeon-holed into one position which makes predicting the starters that much more difficult. However, their positional flexibility allows the Packers to move guys around when injuries occur.

The Packers’ front office will have some difficult decisions to make about how many offensive linemen to keep and which guys to let go. The competition level will be very high in training camp and preseason–don’t be surprised to see multiple players the Packers cut ending up on other teams.

Projected Depth Chart: Starters: David Bakhtiari, Jon Runyan, Josh Myers, Royce Newman, Yosh Nijman. Reserves: Sean Rhyan, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker. PUP: Elgton Jenkins

David Bakhtiari is the biggest wildcard here. He hasn’t proven he’s ready for action and there will be some major red flags if he’s still not ready when the team returns for training camp at the end of July. If he can’t go, expect Yosh Nijman to slide back to the left side and Rasheed Walker to get a chance to start at right tackle (if they don’t bring in a veteran swing tackle by that point).

Big Picture:

Health is the big picture for Green Bay. Bakhtiari still has a major contract ahead of him and they need him to get healthy and anchor the line. Elgton Jenkins is also another player to watch. He should start the season on the PUP list and be ready to rejoin the team shortly after that waiting period ends. If the Packers can get their top two offensive linemen fully healthy by midseason it will be a huge boost for their offense.

They also have a ton of young guys to continue developing up front–Runyan, Myers, Newman, Nijman, Rhyan, Tom and Walker. So, basically everyone else. That development will be key as Green Bay will try to make life as easy as possible for Rodgers and the downgraded skill players.
