The Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver position remains one of the biggest mysteries on the team this summer, as they’ve had a lot of turnover since we last saw them in uniform. How it all plays out between now and the beginning of the regular season will go a long way in determining the success the team has this season.

Continuing our summer preview (you can check out quarterback here and running back here) we take a look at the Packers’ wide receiver situation including who is currently on the roster, what the depth chart projects to be when the season begins, and what the big picture looks like, including any potential free agent additions.

Let’s dive in!

Here is a position-by-position preview of the Green Bay Packers this summer continuing with their wide receiver situation.

Currently on roster: Randall Cobb, Danny Davis, Romeo Doubs, Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers, Malik Taylor, Samori Toure, Sammy Watkins, Juwann Winfree, Christian Watson

The Packers cast a wide net with the hopes of catching a contributor or two in 2022. After losing Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling via a trade and free agency respectively, they’ve added Danny Davis, Romeo Doubs, Samori Toure, Sammy Watkins and Christian Watson.

Overall, this is a fairly deep wide receiver position even if they don’t have the top-end talent most teams do. There will be an intense battle for the final roster spots and that should be fun to watch throughout training camp and preseason.

Projected depth chart: 1. Allen Lazard 2. Sammy Watkins 3. Christian Watson 4. Randall Cobb 5. Amari Rodgers 6. Romeo Doubs 7. Samori Toure

One of the biggest questions is just how many receivers will Green Bay keep on their final roster? Lazard, Watson, and Cobb are locks with Watkins and Rodgers in the very next tier as likely to make the team. That already puts them at five receivers.

My prediction is they’ll keep seven due to the potential a lot of their guys have. That opens the door for both Doubs and Toure to make the team and prove they can contribute down the road. The depth chart won’t exactly look like this, as guys will move around from the outside to the slot based on their specific skill set.

Big picture:

Green Bay needs somebody to emerge as their top option and do so quickly. Lazard could be the favorite, but don’t count out Watkins if he can stay healthy. Watson is also a dark horse to keep an eye on considering his elite athleticism.

I could also see them adding another veteran to the roster in order to bolster the overall talent level at the position. Some free agents at the top of the talent pool include Odell Beckham Jr., Julio Jones and Will Fuller.
