Green Bay Packers Safety Position

The third safety was a very important position under previous defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, and although Joe Barry didn’t utilize three safeties as often, Henry Black was still on the field for almost 300 snaps in 2021–not to mention that Rasul Douglas and Kevin King took some snaps in that role as well.

The role of the third safety is likely going to take another hit with the addition of linebacker Quay Walker, which will allow the Green Bay Packers to stay in their base nickel defense much more often. But with that said, it’s not as if that role is going to go extinct, and Green Bay still needs to round out the depth chart beyond Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos.

So the big question is, who is going to fill those roster spots? Depending on whether the Packers keep four or five safeties, there are two to three spots up for grabs.

Vernon Scott has 90 career defensive snaps but was inactive all of last season despite being on the 53-man roster. Innis Gaines and Shawn Davis are intriguing players but have no NFL experience while the Packers would add Tre Sterling following the draft as a UDFA signing.
