After a long wait following the Green Bay Packers moving up to pick 34 to select Christian Watson, in the third round, they would select offensive lineman Sean Rhyan with the 92nd pick.

Instant takeaways from Green Bay Packers selecting Sean Rhyan

– The offensive tackle depth for the Green Bay Packers has been a strength over the last two seasons; however, that doesn’t appear to be the case right now. Healthy options at tackle include David Bakhtiari and Yosh Nijman, while the only backups on the roster are OT/G Cole Van Lanen, and centers Michal Menet, and Jake Hanson–all with really no NFL experience.

– Given the lack of depth, this feels like it could be the third consecutive draft that Brian Gutekunst addresses the OL three separate times just as he did in 2020 and 2021.

– Rhyan measured in at 6’4″ – 321 pounds and posted a RAS of 8.18 (as a tackle), including elite broad and vertical jumps. He would run a 5.25-second 40-yard dash. His RAS becomes 9.35 as a guard.

– Rhyan is an experienced player with 2,147 snaps at left tackle, according to PFF ($$), during his three-year career as a starter.

– Over his career, he has allowed only two sacks. This past season was by far his best as Rhyan gave up just one sack and 13 pressures. He ranked 17th among all OTs in PFF’s run-blocking grade and 23rd in overall grade.

– At the NFL level, with 32.375″ arms, Rhyan may be best suited at guard, where he will likely compete for playing time right away. With that said, if that is the case, he could still provide the Packers with an option at tackle if needed–and Green Bay could still give him the opportunity to earn playing time there first. We all know how much they covet that versatility.

– If Rhyan is going to challenge anyone right away for playing time, my guess is that it would be Royce Newman.

– Rhyan has 150 career special teams snaps over three seasons. He was on the field for a career-high 58 special teams snaps in 2021.

– Following the pick, Rhyan told Packers reporters that he has never missed one snap in his college career due to an injury.

– Other positions that the Packers still have to address on Day 3 include adding another receiver, edge rusher, tight end, and safety.

– A look at Rhyan’s draft profile from Lance Zierlein of NFL.com:

"“Three-year starter with the potential to offer team options at either tackle or guard. Rhyan has good size and plays with fairly explosive short-area movements, helping him establish early success getting into run-blocking fits. He’s fundamentally sound as a run blocker but a fear of getting beat by speed might play into issues over-setting and giving away too many pressures from inside moves and counters. He has the hand usage, bend and build to transition to guard. Plus, his pass protection experience at tackle combined with dual-position roster flexibility should add to his draft standing and improve his chances of becoming an eventual starter.”"
