4 Big Things from the Green Bay Packers Trading Davante Adams
By Paul Bretl
I’m sure many of us are still processing the trade between the Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas that sent Davante Adams to the Raiders in exchange for a first and second-round pick in this year’s draft.
The deal made Adams the highest-paid wide receiver in football and left the Green Bay Packers with a huge hole to fill on offense.
Now that I’ve had time to take a step back and digest everything, here are my four big things from this trade.
Wide Receiver went from a big need to a massive need for the Green Bay Packers
Without Davante Adams, the current state of the Green Bay Packers wide receiver room is as follows: Randall Cobb, Allen Lazard, Amari Rodgers, Chris Blair, Juwann Winfree, and Rico Gafford.
Even with Adams on the team, addressing receiver early on in the draft should have been on Brian Gutekunst’s to-do list, but now it is a must.
Some good news is that the Packers have additional resources to do so. Without Adams’ franchise tag on the books, they have an additional $20.1 million in cap space available. A few free-agent targets could include Julio Jones, Jarvis Landry, Will Fuller, and Juju Smith-Schuster.
The Packers also received picks 22 and 53 from Las Vegas, giving them four picks in the top-60 to address the receiver position with in the draft. This is again a talented draft class, which should provide Green Bay the opportunity to find a Day 1 starter or even two.
While we have to wait and see what it is, there is a plan to add to the receiver room, and Green Bay has the assets to do so. I can’t imagine that Rodgers would have returned if the receiver room was going to be left in a state of disarray.
