Green Bay Packers Rumors: Team “Expected” to Re-Sign Rasul Douglas
By Paul Bretl
NFL free agency doesn’t officially begin until Wednesday, March 16th, but Monday marks the opening of the legal tampering period where the Green Bay Packers, along with the rest of the NFL, can begin negotiating with free agents.
With their challenging salary cap situation, it is difficult to know which of their own free agents the Green Bay Packers will be able to retain or how much spending power they will have in free agency, but according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, the Packers are “expected” to re-sign Rasul Douglas.
Douglas was signed off the Arizona practice squad prior to Week 6 as the Packers were in desperate need of cornerback depth. He quickly went from being a rotational player to a starter, and not only did Douglas help provide that needed stability at a key position, but he was also quite dominant.
According to PFF ($$), Douglas was targeted 66 times and allowed just 34 completions at 10.6 yards per catch. He also came away with seven pass breakups and five interceptions, two of which went for touchdowns. It’s not at all hyperbolic to say that without Douglas, Green Bay doesn’t win 13 games.
The Green Bay Packers cornerback room will receive a much-need boost with Douglas back in the mix.
A fully healthy cornerback room led by Douglas, Eric Stokes, and Jaire Alexander will form perhaps the best trio in football. With only Alexander, Stokes, and a whole lot of inexperience on the 2022 roster at this point, cornerback was a big need for Green Bay this offseason, with the other three players on the roster totaling just 38 career defensive snaps.
Now, keep in mind this is only a report, and nothing is official, so we do not have any info on what the contract will look like. But to help provide us with an idea of the type of deal that Douglas could receive, Spotrac is projecting that he is going to make $9.2 million per year over four years.
The Green Bay Packers entered Monday $43.82 million over the salary cap and will have to be under by the new league year on March 16th. One big variable that we do not know at this point are the details of Aaron Rodgers’ extension, which will provide cap relief; the big question is, how much?
We also have to wonder what this signing could mean for De’Vondre Campbell. My guess is that if Douglas is back, Campbell will be playing elsewhere.
