Milwaukee Bucks to Workout Former Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans
By Paul Bretl
Just before the trade deadline, the Milwaukee Bucks were part of a four-team trade that landed them Serge Ibaka as they traded away Donte DiVincenzo, Rodney Hood, and Semi Ojeleye. On the buyout market, they would recently add DeAndre Bembry and Jevon Carter as well.
From a roster standpoint, the Milwaukee Bucks have one opening remaining, and according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, they will be working out former Rookie of the Year, Tyreke Evans.
"“The former Rookie of the Year will visit Milwaukee for a work out and potential deal after being suspended for violating the anti-drug program in 2019,” said Charania via SI. ”The Bucks currently have one open roster spot and Evans, who’s now 32, was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft and is known for his versatility as a guard and wing.”"
Evans last played with Indiana during the 2018-2019 season. He was suspended by the NBA for two-plus seasons for violating the league’s anti-drug program, and Evans was just reinstated a few weeks ago. He is now able to sign wherever he pleases.
As mentioned above, Evans is a former Rookie of the Year with Sacramento, where he was the fourth overall selection in that year’s draft. Evans would go on to average 37.2 minutes over 72 games that season along with 20.1 points — which is still a career-high — 5.3 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 1.5 steals.
During his most recent action with the Pacers, Evans averaged 20.3 minutes per game while averaging 10.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 0.8 steals. He would also shoot 35.6% from 3 on 3.1 attempts per contest.
With DiVincenzo in Sacramento, along with Pat Connaughton and George Hill still sidelined with injuries, the Milwaukee Bucks are still in search of that added wing depth, particularly on offense with some much-needed scoring off the bench.
The hope would be that Evans could provide a boost in each of those categories. He has averaged 15.7 points per game over his career, and his 3-point shooting has steadily improved as well. While his career average is 32.3%, Evans hit 37.7% of his 3-point attempts from 2015 to 2019 on nearly 4.0 attempts per contest.
The big question, however, is if the Bucks were to sign Evans, how quickly can he get back into the swing of things after being out of the league for over two years? And how much of his old form can he still regain?
With 21 games to go in the season, the Milwaukee Bucks are 36-25 and currently the five seed in the East. In terms of opponent win percentage, Milwaukee has the toughest remaining schedule in basketball.
