With the news on Monday that Jordan Love was placed on the reserve/COVID list, it was just a matter of time before the Green Bay Packers made moves at the quarterback position—they just simply cannot make it through the week with only two on the roster.

The Green Bay Packers make some moves at quarterback in Love’s absence.

So the first move was to elevate Kurt Benkert from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The second move was to sign Danny Etling to the practice squad for depth and as an extra body at the quarterback position in practice.

With Love being vaccinated, there is the possibility that he could return for Sunday’s game against Chicago if he has back-to-back negative tests 24 hours apart. However, the Green Bay Packers have to prepare as though they will be without him—which very well could be the case.

As long as Love is on the reserve/COVID list, Benkert will be QB2, and depending on how Aaron Rodgers’ toe is feeling, Benkert may get all of the first-team reps in practice this week as well, if Rodgers continues to sit out with his injury—although the reigning MVP has made it very clear that he has no intentions of missing any games.

So with Love out and Rodgers’ practice status unknown, in the meantime, Etling will provide the Green Bay Packers with an extra arm for practice and he may even work with the second-team if Rodgers isn’t participating.

Etling was a 2018 seventh-round pick out of LSU by the New England Patriots. He has no career regular season snaps and has spent time with New England, Atlanta, Seattle (twice), Minnesota, and Denver.

During Etling’s final two seasons at LSU, he would complete 59.8 percent of his passes for 4,586 yards at 8.5 yards per attempt. He also tossed 27 touchdowns to only seven interceptions.
