Packers should target Odell Beckham Jr. after his release
There’s been a lot of drama surrounding the….Cleveland Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. in recent weeks including the multiple rumors about him potentially getting traded out of Cleveland by the deadline. One such rumor that was probably more of fan speculation included the Green Bay Packers.
Yahoo Sports reported the Browns didn’t receive a trade offer from any team at the deadline and the drama has intensified in Cleveland since the trade deadline Tuesday. Beckham Jr. was dismissed from practice two straight days, Beckham Jr.’s father posted defamatory videos of Baker Mayfield on social media, and even LeBron James joined the mix when he tweeted “FreeOBJ. Unsurprisingly, the team is now working out the details of his release.
The two sides are expected to revise his contract and then he’ll be released on Friday according to Pro Football’s Mike Florio.
Disgruntled wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is about to be released and the Green Bay Packers would be wise to go after him.
The New Orleans Saints were rumored to be interested in his services at the trade deadline but declined to make an offer. They, along with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks, are the likely frontrunners to sign Beckham Jr.
However, the Packers should also throw their hat in the ring and try to sign him.
Yes, Green Bay currently has their own drama to sort through with the Aaron Rodgers’ COVID-19 saga going on and only going to intensify in the next week or so. Still, Beckham Jr. would immediately raise the talent level of the wide receiver room and give them a no. 2 behind Davante Adams who can take advantage of single coverage.
Beckham Jr.’s Cleveland career never quite lived up to the hype. In three years there, he only had one 1,000 yard season–2019–and constantly battled injuries. In six games this year, he only has 17 receptions for 232 yards and zero touchdowns.
Still, he would be an upgrade over the likes of Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Amari Rodgers. A trio of receivers that includes Adams, Beckham Jr., and Marquez Valdes-Scantling would give Green Bay a very diverse set of skills that would make secondaries sweat. They’d be able to cover every level of the football field and put immense pressure on opposing defenses to cover every inch of grass.
It’s unlikely the Packers sign Beckham Jr., especially since it appears there’s a lot of competition. However, general manager Brian Gutekunst has shown he’s willing to give veterans who have been released a try. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
