Just one day after the World Series ends, David Stearns and the Milwaukee Brewers are already making moves this offseason.

Wednesday afternoon it was announced that right-handed pitcher Trevor Gott agreed to a 1-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the deal is a split contract, meaning that he will receive different amounts of money depending on whether he is pitching at the major league level or with any of the Brewers minor league affiliates.

Gott, 29, is mostly a fastball and curveball pitcher, although he does throw in the occasional slider and changeup. Gott has major league experience with the Angels, Nationals, and most recently the Giants.

After a brutal 2020 season with Giants in which he posted a 10.03 ERA in 15 games with a 50 percent hard hit rate. Gott had a solid 2021 with the Giants AAA affiliate, however. In 43 games in AAA last year, Gott had 11.45 K/9 and a 4.10 ERA, although that ERA was inflated due to his .340 BABIP.

The transaction list for Gott in the past year is filled to the brim, as he has spent time off and on the Giants roster on numerous occasions.

In February, he was designated for assignment but cleared waivers and was sent to the Giants AAA affiliate. Later in March, he was assigned to the 40-man roster, only to be designated for assignment yet again, and then cleared waivers one more time for good measure. He was then assigned to AAA where he spent the rest of the year. In early October he elected minor league free agency.

The kicker is that Gott is out of minor league options, so he will either make the Milwaukee Brewers Opening Day roster or he will once again be designated for assignment. There is clear upside to Gott with his swing-and-miss potential, so it will be interesting to see how he looks in Spring Training as he fights for a roster spot.
