Throughout the course of an NFL season, it is not uncommon for the Green Bay Packers, or any other team for that matter, to hold workouts early on in the week. In fact, it’s a fairly standard practice.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Green Bay Packers would workout four players on Monday, and the most notable was cornerback and former Minnesota Viking Holton Hill.

Even before Sunday’s performance, where we once again saw Kevin King struggle, the cornerback depth on this Packers team was in question. Eric Stokes will likely see quite a bit of playing time this season, but he is still a rookie. As I already mentioned, King continues to have the same issues in coverage while Chandon Sullivan is a slot corner, not a boundary.

Based on what we saw during the preseason, Shemar Jean-Charles is nowhere near ready for NFL action, and Isaac Yiadom’s issues in coverage are well documented over his three-year career. Then on the practice squad is Kabion Ento, who has flashed in the preseason and training camp but needs refinement yet.

Cornerback is one of the more important positions in the game and one where you can never have too much experience–which is why Hill being in town for a workout is worth noting.

Hill went undrafted in 2018 out of Texas, where he had over 1,600 snaps in his three seasons with the Longhorns, according to PFF ($$). Hill would allow a completion rate of just 54.7 percent on 128 targets and only 10.6 yards per catch, along with three interceptions and eight pass breakups.

Listed at 6’2″ – 196 pounds, Hill has good size for a cornerback and tested well athletically, posting a Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 7.27 out of 10, including a 4.49 40-yard dash.

Hill would spend his first three NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, which is why his name may be familiar to many Packers fans. During that span, he would appear in 28 games and be on the field for 799 defensive snaps.

Hill recorded one sack and was targeted 66 times, allowing 38 completions (57.6 percent completion rate) at 12.9 yards per catch. He would also come away with an interception, eight pass breakups, and posted a passer rating of 90.0 when targeted.

It’s also important to mention that Hill has 429 special teams snaps in the NFL–an important aspect for any fringe roster player.

Hill spent this summer with Indianapolis before being cut.

In most instances, the players brought in for workouts aren’t signed, but even if the Green Bay Packers were to sign Hill, it would very likely be to the practice squad.

And if that’s the case, there shouldn’t be any sort of expectations from fans that Hill would make significant contributions this season—this signing would be all about bolstering the cornerback depth and being better prepared if an injury or two were to occur.

Also joining Hill during the workout was safety Steven Parker, defensive end RJ McIntosh, and tight end Miller Forristall.
