Green Bay Packers: 2021 Fantasy Forecast
By Matt LeVene
The 2021 Fantasy Football draft season is officially upon us. The annual tradition of selecting the game’s brightest stars to bring home the illustrious league championship is something millions of football fans around the globe take part in every season. With a premium on high-scoring and efficient offenses, key members of the Green Bay Packers have been integral parts of championship-winning fantasy teams in recent years.
The Green Bay Packers’ potent offense, led by league MVP Aaron Rodgers, was a fantasy manager’s best friend in 2020. Everyone wanted a piece of the league-leading offense last season, and now, in 2021, that offense shows no signs of slowing down.
Without further ado, let’s dive into an in-depth breakdown of some key fantasy contributors on the Green Bay Packers roster.
Aaron Jones
This may not be the Aaron you expected me to start with, but in terms of Fantasy Football, running backs are king. Jones has been nothing short of a fantasy superstar each of the past two seasons. The 5th year man from UTEP is a certified RB1 in 2021 again.
A hesitation some people have about Jones is that 2020 second-round pick AJ Dillon will split the backfield work. I personally do not share this concern. Jones is the workhorse back in this dynamic offense. The 26-year-old running back inked a new 4-year deal to stay in Green Bay during the offseason, cementing him as a cornerstone of the franchise going forward.
A simple yet effective way to analyze players for fantasy football is to follow the money. What I mean by this is to take note of who gets lucrative contract extensions. When a team re-signs a player, especially a running back, take it as a significant vote of confidence in the player.
For example, let’s looks at the Packers’ situation with Aaron Jones. They are very tight against the salary cap and have a young promising back in AJ Dillon already under team control, and still, they went out and paid Aaron Jones. This shows that Brian Gutekunst and the rest of the decision-makers in Green Bay love what Jones brings to the table.
I believe Aaron Jones will be a top 8 RB this season and find himself in the second tier of backs, behind Christian McCaffery, Dalvin Cook, and Alvin Kamara. He does offer some upside to enter the top 3, as the Packers project to have one of the best offenses in the entire league.
I would feel comfortable drafting Jones in the mid to late first round of any fantasy draft.
