Green Bay Packers: Predicting the 5 Players Cut on Tuesday
By Paul Bretl
Around the NFL, and including the Green Bay Packers, teams have to trim their rosters from 90 players down to 85 by the deadline at 4:00 PM EST on August 17th.
Recently, there was only one cutdown day for teams which came after the preseason when rosters needed to be trimmed to 53 players. But this year, there will be three cutdowns. As mentioned above, the first will take place on Tuesday as rosters are cut from 90 to 85 players.
The next will occur on August 24th, with rosters going from 85 players down to 80. And the third roster cutdown will be the last, as teams go from 80 players to 53 on August 29th.
As GM Brian Gutekunst told reporters on Sunday, he preferred the old method because it gave him and the coaching staff more time to evaluate everyone, and it also afforded those fringe roster players more opportunities. But that isn’t how things will play out this year.
Admittedly, making these predictions wasn’t easy as we haven’t seen or heard how many of these players have been performing throughout training camp and the preseason. So in an attempt to make some educated guesses, I looked at positions of depth on this Green Bay Packers team and made a few logical assumptions.
JJ Molson – K
We saw JJ Molson on the field for the Green Bay Packers’ first preseason game against Houston, but let’s be honest here, Mason Crosby is going to be the team’s kicker this season. Over the last two seasons, Crosby has hit 38 of his 40 field-goal attempts and 99 of his 104 extra-point attempts.
Green Bay did keep Molson on the practice squad last season, and maybe once again they see value in that, but as I sit here and make my predictions, it doesn’t make sense to roster a kicker who has no chance of making the final roster.
