The recruiting train for the Wisconsin Football program continues to roll along and gather steam as they’ve now landed their second 4-star recruit from the 2022 class in safety Austin Brown from Johnston City, Illinois. In-state offensive tackle Joe Brunner is the other 4-star commitment from this class, and the addition of Brown now gives the Badgers 11 hard commits–10 of which have happened in just the last few weeks.

The 6’1″ – 195-pound safety is the 21st rated safety in this class by 247Sports and the sixth-ranked player from the state of Illinois. In addition to Wisconsin, Brown had 20 other offers, some of which included Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, TCU, and Boston College.

During his junior season, Brown would tally 36 tackles, two of which were for a loss, a pair of forced fumbles, and two pass breakups over six games, according to Evan Flood of Badger247. In addition to playing safety, Brown also played quarterback, amassing 1,126 rushing yards at nearly 10 yards per carry, along with 14 touchdowns.

For more on what Brown can add to this already stout Wisconsin Badgers’ defense, here is what 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Allen Trieu had to say about him in his scouting report:

"“High school quarterback and safety. Dominant player at a smaller school. Well built, strong, and shows physicality as a hitter and in taking on blocks. Has good speed and can get from place to place on the field quickly with good acceleration.”That makeup speed shows up in coverage and he has good change of direction as well but needs more reps in man to man coverage and technical polish there. With his size, some schools may look at converting him to linebacker, but he has shown the athletic qualities to stay as a safety if need be. Could also be a hybrid.”"

Likely starting for the Badgers at safety this season will be Scott Nelson and Collin Wilder with Travian Blaylock, 4-star true freshman Hunter Wohler, Titus Toler, and John Tochio as options off the bench. Being able to steal Brown away from the state of Illinois is a big get for the future of the safety position at Wisconsin as the Badgers now appear out of the running for Cristian Driver along with Braelon Allen’s move to running back.

With the addition of Brown, the 2022 Wisconsin Football class now ranks 29th nationally and sixth in the Big Ten by 247Sports.
