Wisconsin Football: 2022 Class Lands In-State OL Barrett Nelson
By Paul Bretl
Prior to this weekend, in-state quarterback Myles Burkett was the only commitment that the Wisconsin football program had in the 2022 class. However, that is no longer the case. After having a flurry of official and unofficial visits at the beginning of June, the Badgers have now landed offensive lineman Barrett Nelson.
Nelson’s father, Todd Nelson, was an offensive lineman for Wisconsin, and of course, his older brother Jack, a former 4-star recruit, is currently on the roster as well as offensive lineman.
The 6’6” – 255 pound Nelson is a 3-star recruit from Fall River High School in Stoughton, Wisconsin. According to 247Sports, he is the 62nd ranked offensive tackle in the 2022 class and the 8th ranked player in the state of Wisconsin.
Nelson also had scholarship offers from Nebraska and Iowa State, as well as a few smaller schools, and according to Badger247, he is one of only four offensive linemen in the 2022 class to receive an offer from the Badgers.
Allen Trieu, a National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, had this to say about Nelson’s game recently:
"“He played both ways on his junior film and some of that athleticism is visible on defense as well. He gets off the ball well on both sides of the ball, he blocks to the whistle, and finishes.”“Early in his career, he was a much leaner prospect and as he has filled in, he has kept the athleticism and flexibility of a smaller player.”"
Nelson will be joining an already loaded offensive line room at the University of Wisconsin, and could be one of several new additions made in this recruiting cycle with offers to three other in-state recruits in Joe Brunner, Billy Schrauth, and Carson Hinzman.
Recently, Saeed Khalif, Wisconsin’s Director of Player Personnel, who oversaw the recruiting department accepted a position at Michigan State. And over on Twitter, there is some speculation that Jensen Gebhardt could be on the move as well. Both played integral roles in securing the two highest-rated recruiting classes in program history, including the 16th ranked class in 2021.
We will have to see how all of that affects Wisconsin on the recruiting trail this year, but we are in prime commitment season, and without a doubt there will be more to come following Barrett Nelson.
