There is still a ways to go before the Green Bay Packers — and every other NFL team, for that matter — have to know what their final 53-man roster is going to look like. And the true litmus test for these fringe roster players hasn’t even taken place yet, that is of course training camp and the preseason–those 5ish weeks of games and practices will tell us what we need to know.

As is the case for every other NFL team, a majority of the Green Bay Packers’ roster spots are already accounted for, so when looking at which dark horse candidates could make a roster push, as always, it’s going to come down to how well they are playing — performance is King — but they also need to be a part of a position group with spots available.

So based on some mini-camp scuttlebutt, the construction of this roster, and some educated guessing, I’ve identified three under-the-radar players that fans should keep their eyes on this summer as each one of them could make a strong push for the final 53-man roster.

Green Bay Packers Dark Horse Roster Candidate: CB Kabion Ento

As I just said, there is some guesswork involved here, and when discussing why Kabion Ento could make the Green Bay Packers’ final roster, that’s what I’m mostly relying on because we just haven’t seen much of him since entered the NFL in 2019. Ento was a receiver in college at Colorado but converted to cornerback when he joined the Packers as an undrafted rookie. Unfortunately, he missed all of last season with an injury, and he has no regular-season NFL snaps.

However, as the old saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. And I believe there is some smoke around Ento. For starters, before being placed on IR, he was on the Packers’ initial 53-man roster last year. By putting him on the roster and then straight to IR, it gave Ento the opportunity to return at some point during the season–which is some proof that the Packers like what they have in him.

At mini-camp this past week, Ento came away with an interception and was seeing plenty of reps as a gunner on special teams–an important role. Like any fringe roster player, it’s important that Ento showcase his special teams value since that is where he will likely see a majority of his snaps. Depending on how many cornerbacks the Packers keep on the final roster, at least one and possibly two spots are available.
