We knew that the Green Bay Packers were going to add to the quarterback room following the draft. For starters, GM Brian Gutekunst told us this was going to happen, but even without that caveat, that should have been assumed because Green Bay had only two quarterbacks on the roster at the time–Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love.

After signing veteran Blake Bortles earlier this week, the Packers have now also added Kurt Benkert to the 90-man roster. Benkert, along with former Ole Miss and Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly, was in Green Bay the last few days participating in rookie mini-camp as a tryout candidate.

Benkert went undrafted in 2018 and had spent the last three seasons with Atlanta. In 2018 and 2020, he was on the practice squad, and he spent the 2019 season on IR with a toe injury. Benkert spent his college days initially at Eastern Carolina, where he appeared in three games during the 2014 and 2015 seasons before transferring to Virginia, where he was the starter for two years.

Over 24 games with the Cavaliers, Benkert threw for 5,759 yards with 46 touchdowns, 20 interceptions, and he completed 57 percent of his passes at 6.3 yards per attempt.

Benkert adds a much-needed camp arm to the mix. As I’ve said on a few occasions, regardless of the Green Bay Packers’ relationship with Rodgers, they were always going to add to the quarterback room–there are simply too many snaps to go around during training camp.

The addition of Benkert puts the Packers roster at the maximum of 90 players and while making the final roster is unlikely, Benkert could provide depth on the practice squad this season.
