This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone; Brian Gutekunst even said after the draft that the Green Bay Packers would be exploring veteran options at the quarterback position. So no, this has nothing to do with the ongoing Aaron Rodgers’ situation and is something that would have happened regardless—the Packers just simply need more camp arms.

With Rodgers and Jordan Love as the only quarterbacks on the roster, there are just too many reps to go around for those two. Every NFL team has at least three or four quarterbacks on their 90-man roster.

So again, this is just a formality, but according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Green Bay Packers are bringing in Kurt Benkert and Chad Kelly to rookie mini-camp on “a tryout basis.”

Benkert has been on the Atlanta practice squad the last three seasons after going undrafted in 2018 and has no career NFL regular season snaps.  He spent his first two college seasons at Eastern Carolina before transferring to Virginia where he threw for nearly 5,800 yards and 46 touchdowns to 20 interceptions while completing 57 percent of his passes over that two year span.

The other quarterback being brought in is Chad Kelly, the nephew of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly.

Kelly was a seventh round pick by Denver in 2017 and has spent time with both the Broncos and Indianapolis Colts; again, never seeing any regular season snaps. Kelly appeared in 27 games during his career at Ole Miss, completing 64 percent of his passes for 6,858 yards and 50 touchdowns to 21 interceptions.
