Green Bay Packers Reportedly Interested in C David Andrews
By Paul Bretl
By several metrics, the Green Bay Packers’ offensive line in 2020 was the best in the NFL. However, there are some questions entering the new season.
Who will be the center? What will they do at tackle in David Bakhtiari’s absence?
On Monday, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network suggested that the Green Bay Packers will be active in the offensive line market once the first wave of free agency ends.
Then today, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reported that the Packers are one of a few teams interested in center David Andrews, who was signed as an undrafted rookie by New England in 2015 and has been their starting center since 2016–excluding the 2019 season which he spent on IR.
Per Mike Garafolo, the Patriots did try to re-sign Andrews, but he wants to explore other options in free agency.
Last season, Andrews did miss some time with a broken thumb but was on the field for 370 pass-blocking snaps and allowed only two sacks and 12 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus ($).
He also ranked 16th out of 39 eligible centers in PFF’s run-blocking grading system and was ninth among centers in ESPN’s run-blocking win rate metric.
In 2017, Andrews was PFF’s 4th highest-graded center, and he was 11th in 2018.
Of course, with any potential free-agent addition, we have to discuss price, and with many teams being under financial constraints, it may be tough to estimate where some players may fall. With that said, Spotrac projects a three-year deal for Andrews with an AAV of $7.1 million.
Admittedly, if Andrews’ price tag is in that ballpark, that does seem high for the Green Bay Packers, but adding depth and competition to the offensive line this offseason should absolutely be on their radar.
