Green Bay Packers Rumors: Interest in Will Fuller Ramping Up
By Paul Bretl
Ian Rapoport has reported that the Green Bay Packers’ interest in Houston Texans’ wide receiver Will Fuller is about to “ramp up.”
Late this past week, it was reported by Aaron Reiss of The Athletic that the Green Bay Packers were one of several teams who had called on Houston Texans’ wide receiver Will Fuller. Well now, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the Packers’ interest will be ramping up as the trade deadline on Tuesday approaches:
"“The Packers may have the second-highest scoring offense in the NFL, but they still may add a weapon down the stretch. Sources say Green Bay has maintained interest in Texans WR Will Fuller over the past few weeks, and that interest goes back as far as the summer. Expect that to ramp up as Tuesday nears.”"
As Rapoport mentions, Green Bay has had one of the most productive offenses in the NFL this season, yet without Allen Lazard, and of course, not including Davante Adams, the receiver unit has largely underwhelmed again.
Last week in Houston, receivers not named Adams totaled only two receptions for six yards. Although Malik Taylor did find the end zone. The previous week in Tampa Bay, that same group caught four passes for 48 yards with no touchdowns.
Fuller, who is in the final year of his deal, is having a career year with 31 receptions for 490 yards at a career-high 15.8 yards per catch with five touchdown receptions. As good as Lazard has been, Fuller is someone who could take over that No. 2 receiver role, and he’d certainly be a much better deep threat than what Marquez Valdes-Scantling has been.
According to Pro Football Focus ($), Fuller’s 175 deep receiving yards – passes of 20+ yards – is the 12th most in the NFL, while his downfield completion rate of 55.6 percent is the fourth-highest.
If acquired at the trade deadline, Fuller would come with a $5.38 cap hit for the remainder of the season, according to Ken Ingalls. As Ken points out, given the Packers cap situation, adding Fuller would make things very tight, but it is doable for Green Bay. As far as what it would cost to bring Fuller to Titletown, Rapoport mentions that it’ll “likely take a high pick” for Houston to make a deal.
The NFL trade deadline is just a few days away on November 3rd, and based on this most recent report, Will Fuller to the Green Bay Packers is certainly worth monitoring. Let’s see if GM Brian Gutekunst makes a big splash to help make that Super Bowl push.
