Green Bay Packers Practice Squad Tracker
By Paul Bretl
Today the Green Bay Packers will be building their 16-man practice squad. Stay up to date with their latest moves right here.
Yesterday, the Green Bay Packers trimmed their roster from 80 players down to 53. Now, they spend Sunday building their 16 man practice squad.
Due to COVID-19, the practice squad rules have been modified this season. For one, as I mentioned, they can have 16 players on the practice squad when in previous years, it’s been only 10 players that have been allowed.
While typically, teams will use the practice squad as a place to stash young players and develop them, this year, six veterans – players with four or more years of accrued service – can be kept there as well.
Additionally, teams can protect four players every week from being poached and added to the 53-man rosters of another team. And the last big change is that teams can call up two practice squad players each week.
When it comes to the Green Bay Packers, of the cuts that they made yesterday, the only player who was claimed by another team was wide receiver Malik Turner, and he is now with the Dallas Cowboys. Other than Turner, all other players that participated in training camp are available to bring back.
Given that at any point, a player could be held out due to COVID-19, the players on the practice squad this year could very likely play a much bigger role in 2020 than what they have in year’s past. GM Brian Gutekunst even mentioned recently, in order to be successful, it’s going to take all 69 players on the roster this year.
So with all of that out of the way, let’s take a look at who the Green Bay Packers have added to the practice squad up to this point, and be sure to check back as new updates are released.
