In what some may consider a surprise, the Green Bay Packers have cut fan favorite Jake Kumerow.

Depending on where you stand on the matter, the Green Bay Packers made their first “surprise” cut of the day already, deciding to move on from fan favorite, Jake Kumerow.

The UW-Whitewater grad quickly became a favorite among the Packer faithful with his underdog story coming from a DIII program, along with the big-play ability that he flashed. In his two years with Green Bay, Kumerow would haul in 20 receptions for 320 yards at a solid 16.1 yards per catch with two touchdowns. And of his 20 receptions, four went for at least 20 yards.

On top of that, Kumerow had Aaron Rodgers in his corner. Over the last two seasons, QB1 has spoken very highly of Kumerow numerous times, and as recently as this week, alluding to him being a lock to make the final roster.

However, it always seemed that the thought of what Kumerow could do was always more impressive than what he consistently did on the field. I find it very telling that even with a very underwhelming receiving core in 2019, Kumerow still didn’t see much playing time or targets last season.

It’s also worth mentioning that he was the oldest receiver on this roster and has reached his ceiling. When making back-end roster decisions, teams should always choose upside over a known commodity that, truthfully, hasn’t done that much over two seasons.

With Kumerow now gone, one receiver, in particular, to keep your eyes on is Darrius Shepherd. He has put together another excellent camp, catching everything in sight, and he once again has the attention of Matt LaFleur:

"“Shep’s done an outstanding job,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “I think he’s again showed up, consistently separating and has caught the ball pretty well for the most part.”"
