Green Bay Packers Working Out Former 2nd Round WR Devin Smith
By Paul Bretl
Reportedly the Green Bay Packers have another wide receiver in for a workout, and it is former second-round pick, Devin Smith.
Shortly after hearing the news that the Green Bay Packers were hosting the recently released Chester Rogers, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that they were also working out former second-round receiver, Devin Smith.
Smith put together an all-around solid career at Ohio State, where he totaled over 2,500 receiving yards at 20.7 yards per catch along with 30 touchdowns. As expected, his senior year was his most productive as he hauled in 931 receiving yards at an incredible 28.2 yards per catch with 12 touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Smith’s NFL career has been riddled with injuries.
A second-round selection by the New York Jets, Smith tore his ACL during his rookie season in 2015, and that caused him to miss much of the 2016 season as well. He then tore his ACL again in 2017 and was out of football in 2018. Most recently, in 2019, he spent the season with the Dallas Cowboys, where he hauled in five receptions for 113 yards with a touchdown.
All in all, since entering the NFL, Smith has appeared in only 18 games and made just five starts.
If you haven’t noticed, Smith is a big play waiting to happen. Even after battling back from multiple knee injuries, he still averaged nearly 23 yards per catch last season with Dallas, albeit in a small sample size.
This is the kind of explosive playmaking that this Green Bay Packers’ offense could desperately use this season, but the odds are that’s going to come from Marquez Valdes-Scantling and not Devin Smith. As I mentioned when discussing Chester Rogers’ visit, if the Packers do bring either receiver in, they are going to the practice squad and not to the 53-man roster, at least to start.
