It was reported on Monday that the Green Bay Packers worked out six free agents. Here is what you need to know.

On Monday, the Green Bay Packers held their second practice of the 2020 season, but it was also reported by Rob Demovsky of ESPN that they held try-outs for six current free agents. Now, before you get your hopes up, Snacks Harrison, Tramon Williams, Jared Veldheer, or Taylor Gabriel were not among the participants.

Up until recently, teams were unable to hold try-outs due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, the NFL lifted that rule, and clearly, the Packers took full advantage.

The most recognizable name on the list belongs to Reginald Kahlil McKenzie, the son of former Packers’ executive, Reggie McKenzie. The former Green Bay Southwest star played on the defensive line while at Tennesee, but after being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2018 draft, he converted to an offensive lineman. He is currently listed as a guard and also spent time in Seattle.

Next, three of the six players that Green Bay worked out were linebackers. Joey Alfieri went undrafted in 2019 but was signed by Philadelphia before making his way to the New York Giants, and then eventually, the San Francisco 49ers before the season ended. At Stanford, Alfieri appeared in 47 games totaled 156 tackles, 25.5 of which were for a loss, along with 12 sacks and two interceptions.

Drew Lewis is another undrafted free agent from the 2019 class that bounced around from team to team last season. At Colorado, he played in 31 games and recorded 167 tackles, 12 for a loss, with five sacks and one interception.

The final linebacker was D’Juan Hines, who went undrafted in 2018 and in his first two seasons spent time with the Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland Browns, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Most recently, he was in the XFL with the New York Guardians. Hines’ breakout season at Houston came his final year when he posted 110 tackles and logged an interception.

In addition to working out McKenzie and the three linebackers, Green Bay would also host two interior defensive linemen. Like the others before him, Javier Edwards has bounced around and at 6’3″ – 350 pounds he has one job, and that’s stopping the run. At Colorado, he would total 61 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Lastly is Walter Palmore, who comes with a bit more positional flexibility than Edwards and went undrafted in 2018. Over his final two seasons at Missouri, Palmore would make 44 tackles, six of which came for a loss, along with one sack in 16 games.

As of me writing this, no announcement of the Green Bay Packers making a signing has been made, and I’m guessing there won’t be. All six of these players have already been with several teams in their short careers, and it’s hard to envision them being an upgrade over who Green Bay already has on the roster.

However, if the Packers were to make an addition, there would have to be a cut that follows. Their roster currently sits at 80 players, which is the max amount that teams can have as of August 16th.
