Green Bay Packers: EDGE Best and Worst Case Scenarios
By Kenny Jilek
It’s time for EDGE players in the Green Bay Packers’ best and worst-case scenarios for every player series.
After an extremely underwhelming pass-rushing unit in 2018, Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers attacked the position in free agency and the draft, signing the Smith brothers and drafting Rashan Gary with the 12th overall pick.
This season, with Kyler Fackrell gone, there will be a big competition for the backup edge rusher spot. These guys are frequently rotated in and out, and sometimes there can be three or four of them on the field at the same time, especially on obvious passing downs. A few rookies will battle with a trio of guys who were mostly practice squad players in 2019 for the fourth and possibly fifth spot on the roster.
The Smith’s will try to recreate and build upon their success last season and continue to be one of the best pass-rushing duos in the league. Gary has all the traits necessary to be a great player and flashed some success last season and will hope to make a big Year 2 jump that could make the pass rush even scarier.
There are three basic categories of EDGE players on the roster right now. First is the three guys that played here in meaningful time last year, the Smiths and Gary. Next, are the guys who are returning, but were on the practice squad last year; Randy Ramsey, Greg Roberts, and Tim Williams. Finally, the rookies, Tipa Galeai, Jonathan Garvin, and Delontae Scott.
