With rosters having to be trimmed to 28 today, the Milwaukee Brewers option Ryon Healy and JP Feyereisen to the Alternate Training Site.

Under normal circumstances, Major League rosters were going to carry 26 players for the 2020 season. However, as we all know, this has been far from a normal year.

Due to a shortened season and concerns surrounding the coronavirus, the MLB implemented a new rule that allowed teams to carry 30 players for the first two weeks of the season, 28 for the two weeks that followed, and then 26 for the remainder of the year. However, even that rule has been revised recently.

Now, there will be no second cut to 26 players, and rosters will remain at 28 once the first cut takes place, which happens to be today.

And when it comes to the Milwaukee Brewers, those decisions have been made as it has been reported that Ryon Healy and J.P. Feyereisen will be optioned to the team’s Alternate Training Site in Appleton.

Healy made three appearances this season with the Brewers, and in two of them, he was surprisingly the team’s leadoff hitter. And I say surprisingly because he has a career OBP of just .298.

In his limited action, Healy would struggle, logging just one hit in six plate appearances with one strikeout and no walks, totaling a .167 average and .333 OPS. Healy has either been the designated hitter or the first baseman this season, two positions that the Brewers have several other options in, especially once Ryan Braun returns.

Meanwhile, out of the bullpen, Feyereisen has made just one appearance and totaled one inning of work in which he gave up a solo home run, recorded one strikeout, and no walks. Even with a 30-man roster, Feyereisen was already a fringe roster player, and with plenty of other options out of the bullpen, this is a move that shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Both Healy and Feyereisen could be called back up at any point this season as long as there is a corresponding move that sends someone else to the Alternate Training Site or to the IL. But for the time being, they will be looking to stay sharp in Appleton.
