Milwaukee Brewers: 7 Quick Takeaways from 2020 Schedule
By Paul Bretl
The Milwaukee Brewers 2020 schedule has been released, and here are seven quick takeaways.
Agreements between the Owners and the Players Association are in place, Summer Camps have begun, and one of the final pieces to the 2020 MLB restart has been released. That, of course, is the schedule.
Prior to its release, we knew that the Milwaukee Brewers would be playing 60 total games, which includes 40 against their own division, the NL Central, and 20 against the AL Central as well. This is to help reduce the amount of travel for big-league teams, and each division will be playing their geographic counterpart this season.
However, now that the schedule is out, there is no more guessing what these 60 games are going to look like, and with that, I have seven quick takeaways from the Milwaukee Brewers 2020 schedule.
Starting on the Road
With it only being a 60 game season, there isn’t nearly as much time as there usually is to recover from a slow start. Perhaps now more than ever, it is vital to start the season off on the right foot. And although there won’t be fans in the stadiums, beginning with seven straight road games – even if four are against Pittsburgh – means getting off to that fast start just became a little more difficult.
A Nice Home Stretch in September
Even in a shortened season, once we get to September, playoff spots are going to be on the line, and for the Milwaukee Brewers, they have a nice stretch at Miller Park where they’ll be playing nine games in 10 days.
On the Road to Finish the Season
On the flip side, the Brewers will play their final two series and six games on the road against Cincinnati and St. Louis. Obviously, at this point, we don’t know how these final games will affect the playoff picture, but I’d bet these are going to be some very meaningful games for Milwaukee.
Brewers Travel the Fewest Miles
According to MLB Network, the Brewers are going to travel the fewest miles (3,962) out of any team this season. With four extended road trips on the schedule, the fact that the NL and AL Central divisions are so geographically close to each other will hopefully ease these long stretches away from Miller Park.
Longest Home and Road Stretches
Milwaukee’s longest stretch at home will come at the end of August and into the first few days of September, where they will play ten straight games at Miller Park. Meanwhile, their longest stretch away from the friendly confines of Miller Park comes in mid-August, where they will be on the road for 11 days while playing ten games.
The AL Central
As I already mentioned, in addition to playing their division, the Brewers will also be facing the AL Central. Here is how each of those teams finished the 2019 season:
Minnesota: 101-61
Cleveland: 93-69
Chicago: 72-89
Kansas City: 59-103
Detroit: 47-114
4 Off Days in September
There may not be another manager in baseball who is as good at taking advantage of off-days as Craig Counsell is, and in the month of September, the Brewers have four off-days total – the most out of any month – including three straight Thursdays.
Back in September of 2018, Milwaukee had every Thursday off that month as they got incredibly hot and eventually beat the Chicago Cubs in game 163 to clinch the NL Central Crown.
