Green Bay Packers: Predicting the Fate of Every 2021 Free Agent
By Isaac Greig
Players that Should Walk
Kevin King CB
King isn’t a disappointment, but he’s been inconsistent. He’s missed too many games due to injury and allowed big plays as well. But to his credit, he has flashed some serious talent and has a nose for the ball. His five interceptions in 2019 tied for second in the NFC. As an early second-round pick who’s made an impact on the field, King will be able to find a big contract in free agency, one the Green Bay Packers won’t be able to match.
Montravius Adams DL
Adams’ on-field performance has been very disappointing. He’s also staring down a suspension. He should be cut prior to the 2020 season.
Alex Light OT
Light was terrible for the Green Bay Packers last year. Recording a 46.8 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, Light finished as the 6th worst of the 83 graded tackles in 2019. If he doesn’t make some serious improvements one of the rookie linemen will take his spot on the 2020 roster.
Tim Boyle QB
Sorry, Tim. We love ya, but Jordan Love is the Packers backup quarterback and they’re only keeping two.
Will Redmond CB/S
Redmond did not play well in 2019. Maybe he’ll improve for the 2020 season, but with Raven Greene returning from injury, Redmond likely won’t get another opportunity to showcase his skills. Redmond still has the potential to develop into a decent player, but he needs a fresh start with a different team.
Aaron Jones RB
Jones is a special talent operating on the final year of his rookie contract. He offers as much value on passing downs as he does on running downs. The devaluation of the running back position has been closely observed so Jones may not find exactly what he’s looking for in free agency.
The average salary for the top-five paid backs in the league is just under $13.5 million per year. As one of the more balanced backs in the game, Jones is probably worth top-five money. Some team will offer him a competitive contract, but with so many other priorities, and the future starting running back already on the roster, the Green Bay Packers will not be that team.
Jake Kumerow WR
As an undrafted player out of UW-Whitewater, Kumerow has been a fan favorite. The 28-year-old made some big plays and has enough juice for a few more years of production in the league, but the Packers will be looking toward the future at the receiver position. Kumerow may not make the cut in 2020, and more top-tier talent will be added to the receiver group in the 2021 offseason. Kumerow’s time in Green Bay is nearing its end.
Tyler Lancaster DL
Lancaster played his heart out for the Packers, but it wasn’t enough. He’s been just okay against the run and offers zero ability to rush the passer. His replacement will likely be coming in the 2021 offseason.
Lane Taylor OG
Taylor is a solid guard who doesn’t belong in a zone scheme. He recently took a pay cut to keep his job with the Packers and will at the least provide depth along the offensive line. Following the 2020 season, Taylor and the Green Bay Packers should mutually agree to part ways and let Taylor find a decent contract with the right team.
