Josiah Deguara

I think for just about everyone outside of 1265 Lombardi Avenue, the third-round selection of Josiah Deguara was a head-scratching one. However, since the draft we have learned that Deguara is going to play a Kyle Juszczyk-like role with the Green Bay Packers and although he may not always be putting up huge numbers, his impact will be made in different ways and trickle down to his teammates.

Last season the offense was a mix of what Matt LaFleur likes to do and what Mike McCarthy had established over the years. But in 2020, it is all LaFleur, and that means running multiple plays from different formations, with the same personnel to give this offense more unpredictability.

So for Deguara in the Juszczyk role, his versatility will be key. At Cincinnati, he had shown that he is a reliable pass-catcher, a very good blocker, and that he can lineup all over the formation. This ability to do-it-all is going to help keep defenses off-balance and create mismatches not only for himself but for his teammates as well.

San Francisco 49ers’ Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has referred to Juszczyk as irreplaceable. And while Deguara may never be as good as Juszczyk is, if he can fill that role admirably in Green Bay, it is going to open up the rest of the offense.
