Green Bay Packers: 2 Members of 2020 Draft Class Signed
By Paul Bretl
Of the nine members of the Green Bay Packers’ 2020 draft class, two of them have been signed up to this point in the offseason.
As the NFL offseason rolls along, one of the many to-dos that GM Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers have to take care of is signing their rookie draft class. They’ve already come to agreements with 15 undrafted free agents, however, they still have a little ways to go when it comes to locking in their draft class.
As of Saturday, it was reported that the Packers had come to a contract agreement with seventh-round safety, Vernon Scott.
Scott is a versatile safety that can play deep, he covered the slot while at TCU, and with the Green Bay Packers he will fill that hybrid linebacker/safety role, lining up closer to the line of scrimmage. Initially, Scott will likely add depth to the position – which is greatly needed – but he could start competing with Raven Greene for snaps at any time.
The official signing of Scott was the second signing from this year’s draft class, with the first being edge-rusher and seventh-round pick, Jonathan Garvin. Garvin had a productive career while at Miami and in terms of value, he may be the best selection that the Packers had in the draft. Garvin could very well slide into the fourth edge-rusher role with Kyler Fackrell now in New York.
Below are members of the 2020 draft class that still remain unsigned:
- Jordan Love
- A.J. Dillon
- Josiah Deguara
- Kamal Martin
- Jon Runyan
- Jake Hanson
- Simon Stepaniak
Of course, these signings are going to chip away at the Green Bay Packers already tight cap situation. Since they are rookie deals, they won’t break the bank by any means, but they’ll still account for some of the Packers’ spendable cap space.
After restructuring Lane Taylor’s contract which freed up an additional $3 million in cap space, according to Spotrac Green Bay now has $13,006,523 in available cap space. However, as I said some of that will go towards the remaining draft class, as well as the practice squad, in-season spending, and the 52nd and 53rd players on the roster.
While there are some free agent additions that could make sense, such as Tramon Williams, Jared Veldheer, and Mike Daniels if he’s healthy, with the roster already at 90-players, at this time, I don’t see free agency as a top-priority given their cap situation.
With that said, in addition to signing the rest of the 2020 draft class, what should take priority as well is a contract extension for Kenny Clark or David Bakhtiari. Both of which are free agents after the 2020 season, and hopefully, this is one of the next dominos to fall.
But for now, or until one of those contract extensions take place, we will be keeping tabs on which members of the Packers’ draft class officially sign their rookie deals.
