Green Bay Packers: 3 Free Agents They Must Sign After NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers still have needs to address following the NFL Draft and should strongly consider these three free agents.
The Green Bay Packers had an underwhelming performance in the 2020 NFL Draft, to say the least. General manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur zigged where everyone thought they would zag.
It began in the first round when Green Bay traded up four spots with the Miami Dolphins (giving up their fourth round pick in the process) to select quarterback Jordan Love out of Utah State. That officially started the clock on Aaron Rodgers’ end with the Packers.
With huge needs at places like offensive line, wide receiver and defensive line, Green Bay ignored those positions again on Day 2 when they selected running back A.J. Dillon and H-back/tight end/full back Josiah Deguara. Where most analysts thought the Packers would help Rodgers by giving him pass-catchers, Green Bay elected to give him a stronger run game.
In lieu of their surprising draft, the Packers still have work to do to defend their NFC North Championship and achieve their ultimate goal of winning another Super Bowl before Rodgers retires. Here are three free agents they can target to fill the gaps still on their team.
Tramon Williams, CB
The Packers love to use multiple defensive backs as part of their base package, including a fifth one in place of a second inside linebacker. Green Bay is high on Chandon Sullivan, but cornerback Tramon Williams still has another year left in the tank. They’d be able to get him on a cheap deal and he can help support the team when the inevitable Kevin King injury happens. He’s also decent in the slot still and is a good veteran presence on the team.
Damon Harrison, DL
Other than Kenny Clark, the Packers don’t have many serviceable defensive linemen on their roster. Although guys like Kinglsey Keke, Dean Lowry and Montravius Adams have some potential, they haven’t quite lived up to the hype. Harrison would immediately become the second-best lineman on their team and help them slow down running backs more than they did a season ago.
Taylor Gabriel, WR
In one of the deepest wide receiver classes in years, maybe ever, Green Bay failed to draft even one. That leaves them with Devin Funchess and Allen Lazard as the top targets behind Davante Adams, not exactly alluring. Gabriel isn’t as fast as he once was, but he would still provide some much-needed speed to the team. It was just two years ago when he posted career-highs in receptions (67) and receiving yards (688). He can also fill in on the slot in between Adams, Funchess or Lazard. Gabriel would be a nice consolation prize for the Packers after a highly questionable draft.
