The Green Bay Packers surprise many as they trade up in round one to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.

While many were focused on the Green Bay Packers adding a new weapon to the offense or adding speed to the middle of the defense, rumors began to surface a few weeks ago that they interested in quarterback Jordan Love out of Utah State.

As most will remember, it was back in 2005 when then general manager Ted Thompson took Aaron Rodgers with the 24th pick while Brett Favre was still leading the way. Now 15 years later, history repeats itself as Brian Gutekunst traded up from pick 30 to pick 26 to select Love.

Love has the arm and physical traits that NFL teams covet, however, his decision-making is questionable at times and he’s been fairly inconsistent over his career. We see flashes, but we also see a lot of mistakes. He really does seem to be a boom or bust prospect.

So what does this mean for Aaron Rodgers?

Well, not much for the time being. Given his contract, he will be with the Green Bay Packers for two more years, and possibly a third or even a fourth if he continues to play at a high-level.

While Love to some degree – or at least we hope – will benefit from sitting behind Rodgers, just as Rodgers did with Favre, for a Packers team that was on the verge of the Super Bowl in 2019, it can be difficult to come to grips with the fact that they didn’t add an immediate impact player in the first round.

As always, only time will tell if this was the correct move, but we do know one thing, and that is that the Packers better find some contributors with their remaining picks.
