Everyone and their mother are up in arms over the Green Bay Packers selection of quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Fans and people everywhere were up in arms when the Green Bay Packers stunned the world in 2005 by drafting quarterback Aaron Rodgers with the 24th overall pick. Whoops, sorry, I got caught up in the past. Let’s try that again. Fans and people everywhere were up in arms when the Green Bay Packers stunned the world in 2020 by drafting quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick. That’s better.

Although history repeated itself on Thursday night, some fans didn’t seem to learn the first time. Even though the NFL Draft is a prime time to overreact by claiming your organization is anywhere from incompetent to Super Bowl favorites, we must all do our best to R-E-L-A-X for a moment (or a few years).

Yes, it’s incredibly frustrating to see the Packers trade up four spots in the first round, ship away a fourth-rounder in the process, and select a quarterback who maybe, probably would’ve been there four picks later. Especially when Green Bay was just one game away from the Super Bowl last year and has a clear need at wide receiver–a position which there were plenty of good candidates available.

Love also fell for a reason. Following a stellar 2018 season that put him on the first-round radar of many analysts, he took a few steps backward last year and didn’t look much like a top prospect. He was inaccurate, made poor decisions and put a lot of tape out there that isn’t very appealing.

On the other side of the coin, he’s a promising athlete with natural arm strength, mobility and other physical attributes you can’t teach. He’ll have a few years to refine his craft and improve his game. His ceiling is also extremely high which means he could end up being one of, if not THE, best quarterback in this class.

The truth is, we won’t know whether this is a good pick for at least three-to-four years. We could look back and scream at Brian Gutekunst all over again, asking him what the heck he was doing. We could also praise him for this move, as a franchise-saving pick once Aaron Rodgers retires. We don’t know which way the cookie will crumble. For now, let’s just relax.
