Green Bay Packers Add Bruising RB A.J. Dillon
By Paul Bretl
With the 62nd pick, the Green Bay Packers select the bruising running back, A.J. Dillon out of Boston College.
After taking quarterback Jordan Love in the first round to the chagrin of many Green Bay Packers fans, in Round 2 they once again take the long-term approach and select A.J. Dillon, running back from Boston College.
Dillon has rushed for over 1,100 yards in all three seasons, including over 1,500 in two of them. However, he has almost no experience as a pass-catcher with only 21 career receptions. Dillon is a very good athlete posting a relative athletic score of 9.15 and he is a bruising runner who knows how to break tackles. In fact, he was fifth in the nation last year with forcing 81 missed tackles according to Pro Football Focus.
Here is what Kyle Crabbs of The Draft Network had to say about Dillon in his final scouting report:
"“AJ Dillon projects best as a gap/power rusher at the NFL level. Dillon is at his best as a deep set back who can collect momentum working into the POA and carry his burst through the hole.Asking him to slow play, press the line and read/accelerate out of a cut takes away many of his appealing qualities. In a perfect world, Dillon is a short yardage specialist and/or early down back who can churn out tough yards and keep the offense on schedule with the sticks.”"
Admittedly at least for me, this pick is a bit of a head-scratcher. While drafting a running back certainly should have been on Green Bay’s radar in this draft since both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams are free agents after the 2020 season, taking Dillon – who is a one-dimensional back – in Round 2 does seem like a bit of a reach.
With the first two picks the Green Bay Packers and Brian Gutekunst have decided to address the quarterback and running back positions with receiver, tackle, defensive lineman, linebacker, and cornerback all untouched. Certainly not the way any of us expected this go.
