2020 NFL Mock Drafts: Round 2 & 3 Predictions for Packers
By Paul Bretl
Here is a handful of brand new mock drafts predicting what the Green Bay Packers will do in the second and third rounds of the draft.
It’s no secret that the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft didn’t go as many Green Bay Packers fans had expected. Instead of adding an immediate impact player at a position of need such as receiver, linebacker, or defensive tackle, GM Brian Gutekunst went with a long-term approach and traded up for quarterback Jordan Love of Utah State.
For a Packers team that was 13-3 last season, this is a move that upset many, as the hope was that they would add a player that would put them one step closer to bringing the Lombardi Trophy home this upcoming season.
Instead, it has put even more pressure on them to hit on their picks in the second and third rounds. Although they have an additional six picks outside of those two selections, they all come in rounds 5 or later. Meaning, it isn’t likely that Green Bay will find a contributor at that point in the draft and they certainly shouldn’t bank on it.
So with all eyes on the Packers and Gutey, what will he do on Day 2 of the draft? Well, some draft analysts give their predictions in some mock drafts that were just released today.

Round 2: Cole Kmet TE – Notre Dame
Round 3: Troy Dye LB – Oregon
Takeaway: While I don’t mind the Troy Dye pick in Round 3 as he will add some much-needed speed and coverage ability to the linebacker position, overall I just can’t get on board with these results. Kmet is considered by many the best tight end in this class, but it is a weak one overall. Not to mention that first-year tight ends rarely produce. And given the depth of this year’s wide receiver class, going through three rounds with no fourth-round pick and not selecting one would be incredibly disappointing.

Round 2: KJ Hamler WR – Penn State
Round 3: Davion Taylor LB – Colorado
Takeaway: Although it is enticing to think about what KJ Hamler would bring to this Green Bay Packers’ offense, it isn’t happening. He just isn’t anywhere near the Packers’ height and weight thresholds for the receiver position. Meanwhile, taking Davion Taylor in Round 3 is fine, I suppose.

Round 2: Adam Trautman TE – Dayton
Round 3: Laviska Shenault WR – Colorado
Takeaway: You are all well aware of how I feel taking a tight end within the first three rounds of the draft, so I’ll just leave it at that. However, landing Shenault in Round 3 is really nice value pick. With an injury history and a so-so combine performance, he has been falling down draft boards, but I like the skill-set that he would bring to this offense with Matt LaFleur calling the plays.

Round 2: Michael Pittman Jr. WR – USC
Round 3: Logan Wilson LB – Wyoming
Takeaway: Pittman’s skill-set is very similar to what the Green Bay Packers already have on the roster, but he comes with more upside than Devin Funchess or Allen Lazard. Then in Round 3, the Packers get some help at linebacker, although Wilson is a bit limited in coverage.
Kristopher Knox – Bleacher Report
Round 2: Michael Pittman Jr. WR – USC
Round 3: Willie Gay Jr. LB – Mississippi State
Takeaway: More Michael Pittman in Round 2 and another linebacker in Round 3. However, I do like what Gay brings to this defense more than Wilson. Gay is one of the more explosive linebackers in this class and he can hold his own in coverage.

Round 2: Tee Higgins WR – Clemson
Round 3: Adam Trautman TE – Dayton
Takeaway: Higgins produced at Clemson and has some nice tape but I don’t think Gutey can look past his poor athletic testing. And then another tight end in Round 3, however, I do appreciate the effort to get Aaron Rodgers some weapons.
Kyle Crabbs – The Draft Network
Round 2: Laviska Shenault WR – Colorado
Round 3: Adam Trautman TE – Dayton
Takeaway: This is probably my favorite mock draft of the bunch. I know some aren’t fans of Shenault and at pick 30 I can understand but at pick 62 I am all in. As I said above, his skill-set and presence would be a welcomed sight in Green Bay. Then Trautman makes another appearance in Round 3 and I can live with it. Once again, at least it’s two weapons for Rodgers, although we shouldn’t expect much from Trautman in 2020.
