Green Bay Packers: 3 Players to Avoid Early in the Draft
By Paul Bretl
Jordan Love QB – Utah State
In a press conference earlier this offseason, Brian Gutekunst had mentioned that the Green Bay Packers would be open to selecting a quarterback early on in the draft. And since then, they’ve been linked to and held a virtual meeting with Jordan Love out of Utah State. While some may want the Packers to begin looking for Aaron Rodgers’ eventual successor, now is not the time and Love is not the prospect.
For one, given the structure of Rodgers’ contract, he won’t be going anywhere for what is likely three more seasons and potentially a fourth. On top of that, while some like to compare this situation to when Green Bay drafted Rodgers back in 2005, this just isn’t the same at all.
Rodgers was considered by many the first overall pick or at least a top-5 selection, however, Love is not. In fact, his projection is all over the place. While it is easy to look at his arm strength and his measurables, there is just too much inconsistency and poor decision-making in his game to justify taking him in the first round.
Love really seems like a boom or bust prospect and as I’ve already stated, the Packers should be filling roster holes early with players that can help them win in 2020. Not drafting a player who won’t see the field for three seasons and one with as many question marks as Love has.
