It was recently reported that the Green Bay Packers will be conducting a virtual visit with QB Jordan Love. But should they draft him?

In what was a bounce back season in 2019 for the Green Bay Packers, they finished the year 13-3, clinched a first round bye, and came up just one game short of the Super Bowl. However despite their success, as we all know there are still holes to fill on this roster.

Of course, the first few positions that come to mind are receiver, inside linebacker, tackle, and defensive tackle among others. But another position that has been brought up this offseason is the quarterback. With the hope being that Green Bay could find Aaron Rodgers’ eventual successor.

Earlier this offseason, GM Brian Gutekunst mentioned that the Packers are open to the idea of drafting a quarterback and some news was just reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network that Green Bay will be holding virtual visit with Utah State’s, Jordan Love.

Even though the draft is now just a few weeks away, it’s still been difficult to gauge where Love will be selected. Some see him as a top-15 pick, while others see him going late in Round 1 or even in Round 2.

During his tenure at Utah State, Love would appear in 38 games but in his most recent season he would finish with just over 3,400 passing yards after having nearly 3,600 the year before. And on top of that, his completion percentage was only 61.9 percent while throwing 20 touchdowns to 17 interceptions.

Love has a good arm and many of the qualities that NFL teams look for in a starting quarterback. However, his decision-making and accuracy are concerns. In order to truly reach his ceiling at the NFL level, being a backup for a season or even a few, could do him wonders.

So naturally being drafted by the Packers to sit and learn behind Rodgers makes sense. But does that mean Green Bay should do it? I say no.

While it’s easy to point to the Packers drafting Rodgers with Brett Favre still at the helm, there are some major differences. For one, Rodgers was expected by many to be the first overall pick in that draft but instead he fell to Green Bay at No. 24. That just isn’t the case with Love whose draft stock is all over the place. Now if Joe Burrow or Tua Tagovailoa are available at pick 30, let’s talk.

Second, with Rodgers contract he is absolutely going to be a Packer for at least two more seasons and likely a third. Not to mention that if he continues to be effective there are still four total years remaining on his contract. Meaning, there is certainly the possibility that Love spends a good portion of his rookie deal on the bench.

And although Rodgers has been relatively average from a statistical standpoint the past two seasons, don’t be mistaken, he is still Aaron Rodgers.

Now with all of that said I am definitely a fan of Gutey doing his due diligence and looking into Love. And for the Packers, it could be difficult to pass on Love if he is available, especially if they do love – no pun intended – his potential.

However, given Rodgers’ contract along with the needs that the Green Bay Packers have elsewhere, I hope they spend their first round pick on a different position. The Super Bowl window is open and it’s time to win now.
