The Green Bay Packers have both of their feature running backs going into contract years, so drafting one later in the draft could be a smart move.

Coming into the 2020 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers have many holes to be filled and running back is lost in the shuffle, considering they have a premier back in Aaron Jones and a solid sidekick in Jamaal Williams. With bigger needs on the offensive and defensive lines as well as at wide receiver and linebacker, running back will most likely be addressed on day three of the draft.

While I personally would love to see Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams re-signed next offseason, the reality is that paying running backs is an investment that rarely pays off, and the Packers may opt to put their money into the trenches, getting David Bakhtiari and Kenny Clark new contracts. It may be possible to pay all of them, but then there would likely be almost no money for any new free agents.

The one other running back on the roster is Dexter Williams who was a sixth-round pick last year. It appeared that the coaching staff didn’t have much confidence in the rookie as he only appeared in four games, getting five carries for a measly 11 yards in a purely emergency backup role. Williams could see a jump in year two, but bringing in another back to help out would be helpful in rounding out the roster.

With those things being said, the Green Bay Packers aren’t going to get a star like Jonathan Taylor or J.K. Dobbins on the third day of the draft, but I do think there are a few guys that could come in and make a play once in a while and give this offense a nice change of pace and a shot in the arm while being groomed for future success if one or both of the current running backs walk away from Green Bay next offseason.
