Green Bay Packers: Mock Draft Roundup & Big Takeaways 12.0
By Paul Bretl
Another week has passed and here is who the Green Bay Packers are selecting in some of the latest mock drafts.
With the NFL Draft now less than a week away, this is the penultimate edition of Mock Draft Roundup & Big Takeaways. I will put out the final edition this coming Wednesday – the day before the draft – as I’m sure just about every draft analyst will want to get in their final predictions.
However, before we get to that point, another week has passed which means plenty of more mock drafts have recently been released. Previously I’ve mentioned how difficult it is this year to pinpoint what the Green Bay Packers will actually do in the draft early on given the overall depth of this year’s class along with the number of positional needs that they have to fill.
As we’ve seen, this leads to plenty of variety when it comes to the Packers’ early-round selections, but with that said, overall the receiver position has still dominated. And that remains true this week, however, we see some new names this time around that we haven’t seen before. Which isn’t necessarily a good thing as you’ll see.
Chris Trapasso – CBS Sports
Round 1, Pick 30: Jalen Reagor WR – TCU
"“Reagor, Davante Adams, and Allen Lazard make for one heck of a receiver trio in Green Bay for Aaron Rodgers.”"
Round 2, Pick 62: Justin Madubuike IDL – Texas A&M
"“Madubuike is a strong, sturdy interior rusher with a good first step”"
Big Takeaway: I really do like this draft for the Green Bay Packers. Reagor gives them a downfield target to lineup opposite of Davante Adams but he can also become a weapon from the slot as well as on jet sweeps and wide receiver screens. Basically just find a way to get him the ball. Meanwhile, what Madubuike lacks in size he makes up for with leverage and versatility and will immediately get playing time in the middle of the Packers defensive front.

Round 1, Pick 30: Jordyn Brooks LB – Texas Tech
"“Lightning-fast linebacker who fought through a shoulder injury to run at the combine for scouts (posting a 4.54 40). Blake Martinez is no longer in Green Bay, so here’s his replacement. This class’ immense WR depth allows the Packers to address that need later on.”"
Big Takeaway: Well, here is a new pick and one that I am not on board with. Like at all. Most have Brooks with a second or even a third-round grade and linebacker is a position that the Green Bay Packers typically don’t value very highly. This is a massive reach.
Mel Kiper Jr. – ESPN
Round 1, Pick 30: Tee Higgins WR – Clemson
Round 2, Pick 62: Adam Trautman TE – Dayton
Big Takeaway: Higgins produced in college and has very good tape but his athletic measurements don’t meet the Packers’ typical thresholds for the receiver position. Which makes me think that he might not even be on their radar.
As far as Trautman goes, this is a weak tight end class and I’m just not a fan of taking one prior to Round 4. Tight ends rarely produce during their rookie season and for a Packers team that was a game shy of the Super Bowl, spend this second-round pick on an immediate impact player.
Bucky Brooks – NFL Network
Round 1, Pick 30: Josh Jones OT – Houston
"“The Packers could add an athletic blocker to the mix to better protect Aaron Rodgers while also enabling Matt LaFleur to fully implement a zone-based running game.”"
Big Takeaway: Sign me up. Jones is my fifth-best offensive tackle in this class and a year to learn from Rick Wagner and David Bakhtiari should only make him even more game ready. However, with uncertainty around Wagner’s health and play, if needed, Jones can step in and start in 2020 as well.
Will Brinson – CBS Sports
Round 1, Pick 30: Brandon Aiyuk WR – Arizona State
"“Feels too easy to give the Packers another weapon for Aaron Rodgers, but it makes a lot of sense. And Aiyuk gives them a great catch and run guy who can pair nicely with Davante Adams downfield threat.”"
Big Takeaway: Once again, sign me up. We all know that his Green Bay Packers’ offense needs some juice and Aiyuk is just the man for the job. He is a YAC monster and he will give this offense a presence that they just did not have in 2019.
Bryan DeArdo – CBS Sports
Round 1, Pick 30: Jalen Reagor WR – TCU
Big Takeaway: Some more Jalen Reagor in Green Bay. I can’t be upset with that.
Ross Uglem – Packer Report
Round 2, Pick 40: Jalen Reagor WR – TCU
Round 2, Pick 62: Jordan Elliott IDL – Missouri
Round 3, Pick 90: Troy Dye LB – Oregon
Round 3, Pick 94: Troy Pride Jr. CB – Notre Dame
Round 4, Pick 136: Jack Driscoll OT – Auburn
Round 5, Pick 175: Derrek Tuszka EDGE – NDSU
Big Takeaway: Ross was able to trade out of Round 1 while netting an additional top-100 pick and the result was an absolute home run. He adds a weapon to the passing game with Reagor, gets Kenny Clark help inside at pick 62. Then he adds some major speed to this defense with the additions of Dye and Pride Jr. And finally, he caps it off with the Packers finding right tackle of the future in Round 4. Easily one of my favorites out of this entire process.
Joel Klatt – Fox Sports
Round 1, Pick 30: Brandon Aiyuk WR – Arizona State
Big Takeaway: More Aiyuk is certainly alright by me. So here is a highlight of his just for fun.

Frankie Taddeo – Sports Illustrated
Round 1, Pick 30: Tee Higgins WR – Clemson
Big Takeaway: I can understand why many have mocked Higgins to the Green Bay Packers, but as I’ve already said, he did not test well and might not even be on Brian Gutekunst’s radar.
Brent Sobleski – Bleacher Report
Round 1, Pick 30: Jordyn Brooks LB – Texas Tech
Big Takeaway: Why is this becoming a thing? No thank you.
Dalton Johnson – NBC Sports
Round 1, Pick 19: Justin Jefferson WR – LSU
*Packers trade picks 30 and 62 to move up to 19th overall.
"“For the Packers, this is huge for Aaron Rodgers who badly needs more weapons. Jefferson can play inside and outside and could be a game-changer with a QB like Rodgers.”"
Big Takeaway: With this being such a loaded wide receiver group, I would rather see the Green Bay Packers trade down if anything. But with that said, landing Justin Jefferson would be a game-changer. He would step in from Day 1 and be the Packers go-to slot receiver and give them a presence that they haven’t had there since the days of Prime Randall Cobb.
